Cristiano Ronaldo has been setting new marks left and right in 2021, seemingly with every goal he scores. With his hat trick against Luxembourg on Oct. 12, he added another one to the list.
Since Euro 2021 this summer, the 36-year-old has been racking up the milestones while in action with Portugal. He since moved to Manchester United, where he was named the Premier League’s player of the month in September and he’s also a finalist for the FIFA Ballon d’Or .
Here’s a rundown of the milestones Ronaldo has set this year:
Ronaldo hat trick record
His three tallies against Luxembourg gave him his 10th career hat trick with Portugal, which is now the most by a single male player on the international stage:
As of Oct. 12, Ronaldo has 115 goals in 182 appearances. Here are the highlights of his three strikes:
Ronaldo’s international goals record
Ronaldo set the all-time men’s international scoring record by netting twice in Portugal’s World Cup qualifying win over the Republic of Ireland on Sept. 1. His late goals, including one deep in stoppage time, led his nation to a dramatic comeback win and broke a tie with Iran’s Ali Daei on 109 goals atop the all-time charts.
The Portuguese legend officially set the mark when he scored his first with one minute left in stoppage time to tie the score at 1-1 at the Estadio Algarve. It came on a Goncalo Guedes assist in the 89th minute, as Ronaldo met the cross with a perfectly placed header.
He doubled his output on the night with a second finish in the 96th minute and the winner sealed a 2-1 win for Portugal.
He may hold the men’s record, but there are several women who have more goals: Canada legend Christine Sinclair holds the all-time mark with 186 goals, followed by Abby Wambach (184) and Mia Hamm (158).
Euro 2021 top scorer
Despite getting knocked out of Euro 2021 in a Round of 16 shutout, Ronaldo still finished atop the tournament’s scoring race with five goals, beating out Czech Republic forward Patrik Schick on the assist tiebreaker. Another four players remained stuck at four goals each.
Most goals in Euros history
The two goals against Hungary during Euro 2021 pushed Ronaldo past France legend Michel Platini (9 goals), who previously shared the career mark for Euro tournament goals.
Ronaldo has since left him in the dust, reaching 14 goals:
Most combined World Cup + Euro goals
His two goals against France in the group stage at Euro 2021 allowed Ronaldo to jump past German forward Miroslav Klose for the most combined goals for a male player at Euro and World Cup tournaments:
Most Euro tournaments played
It has helped Ronaldo’s goal scoring that he has played in five European Championship tournaments, which also represents a new record. He established the new mark when he set foot in the Puskas Arena in Budapest for his first appearance in the 2021 edition.
He is also the only player to score in five Euro tournaments.
Ronaldo has played in every Euros competition since 2004, when Portugal hosted the event. He helped his country win it in 2016 and the Portuguese entered the 2021 edition as reigning champions. The upcoming Euros tournament is set for 2024 in Germany.
Ronaldo’s career trophy haul
Ronaldo’s staggering exploits in the final third for Portugal have helped cement his standing as one of the greatest players of his generation and he has yet to show any signs of slowing down despite advancing towards his late thirties.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has also won two trophies with his country, including Euro 2016 and the Nations League, but his achievements at club level are arguably even more impressive.
The Portuguese striker has lifted 30 club trophies, including seven league titles and five Champions League crowns, with a Suppercoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia double capping off last season’s campaign in Italy with the Bianconeri.
He shocked the football world by sealing a surprise return to United on summer deadline day, bringing to an end his three-year stay at Juve, and will be expected to continue to deliver the goods in the final third at Old Trafford over the course of his two-year contract.
